INSTALLATION GUIDE
Install Prepperpoint with Rufus.
Rufus is our recommended Windows tool for writing the Prepperpoint system image to a USB drive or external disk. Copying the image as an ordinary file is not enough.

Five steps from image to bootable drive.

Download the files
Download the Prepperpoint system image and compare its published SHA-256 checksum before continuing. Extract it first if it is supplied in a compressed archive.

Connect the correct drive
Connect the USB drive or external disk you want to use. Everything on the selected drive will be erased. Disconnect other external drives to reduce the risk of choosing the wrong one.

Open Rufus
Start Rufus in Windows, select the correct device under Device, then choose the downloaded Prepperpoint image under Boot selection.

Write the image
Check the device name and capacity one final time and select Start. Use any specific write mode stated in the release instructions. Do not interrupt the process or disconnect the drive while it is being written.

Start Prepperpoint
Safely eject the drive. Restart the computer and select the USB or external disk from the computer’s boot menu. From there, run Prepperpoint directly or install it on an internal drive.
Exact choices may be adjusted when the final release file is set. Always follow the information published with the version you download.
STORAGE CAPACITY
Choose capacity for the content you want to carry.
Installed content determines the requirement. Wikipedia, maps and personal collections can need far more space than the base system itself.
Practical minimum
The practical minimum for offline content such as Wikipedia and a limited selection of maps.
RECOMMENDED
512 GBEveryday use
The best choice for normal use, with room for Wikipedia, maps, documents and future expansion.
Large collections
For extensive Wikipedia editions, more map areas and large personal document or media collections.
These capacities are planning recommendations. Exact requirements depend on the Wikipedia editions, maps, images, documents and other packages you select.
CHOOSE A STORAGE MEDIUM
USB works. SSD is better over time.
USB flash drive
Simple, compact and inexpensive. Good for testing and a reserve used less often. Ordinary flash drives often have lower write endurance and more variable quality than an SSD, so they are not the first choice for continuous use.
External SSD — recommended
Fast, shock-resistant and generally better suited to regular use. This is our primary choice when Prepperpoint will run from an external drive over time.
Mechanical hard drive
Can provide a lot of capacity at low cost and suits a more stationary installation. It has moving parts, is more sensitive to shocks and needs careful handling.
After first boot
Verify that Prepperpoint starts, the portal opens and the local network works before placing the drive with your emergency equipment. Start it periodically and keep its content current.
